It's summer time! It's BBQ time! Let's get grilling!
Today I'm going to share with you my Korean BBQ recipes (3 types of meat). I got inspired by the famous Korean cook - Maangchi, but I tweaked the recipes based on my preference and ingredient availability.

Watch the video below for detailed instructions

Ingredients:
  ❥ Meat Marinate:
  • Half an apple (I used Granny Smith's)
  • Half a small onion
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • Small piece of ginger
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tbsp hot pepper paste (gochujang)
  • Black pepper
  • Sesame oil
  • Green onion (scallion)
  ❥ Meat:
  • 0.8lbs (400g) beef slices
  • 1.6 lbs (800g) pork belly slices (2-inch long, 0.2-inch thick)
  ❥ Spicy Dipping Paste:
  • Half an apple
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 onion (if you like. I ran out)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • One stalk of green onion, diced
  • 2 tbsp hot pepper paste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  ❥ Sides:
  • Lettuce leaf
  • Sesame leaf (important ingredients)
  • Sliced carrot (or other vegetables of choice)
  • Kimchi
  • Roasted seaweed

Instructions:
  1. Put apple, onion, garlic and ginger from the Meat Marinate ingredients into a food processor, puree
  2. Add beef into a mixing bowl or a ziplock bag, then add 1/2 of the pureed mixture from Step 1 into the beef. Then, add 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp brown sugar, a pinch of black pepper, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 stalk of chopped green onion. Mix well and refrigerate till needed.
  3. Add half of the pork belly slices into a mixing bowl or a ziplock bag, add the rest of the pureed mixture from Step 1 into the pork. Then, add 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp hot pepper paste (gochujang), pinch of black pepper. Mix well and refrigerate till needed.
  4. Put apple, garlic and onion from the Spicy Dipping Paste ingredients into a food processor, puree.
  5. Add sesame oil, sesame seeds, green onion, hot pepper paste, soy sauce into the pureed mixture (Step 4). Mix well
  6. The rest of the pork belly (0.8 lbs), we're just going to grill it and eat it with dipping paste and other vegetables. In Korean it's called "samgyeopsal".
  7. To eat, add a bit of sesame oil onto the grill, add meat and cook till ready to eat. Add a bit of meat and vegetables of choice, kimchi, seaweed and dipping paste onto a sesame leave and lettuce leave. Wrap it up and eat it whole like a real Korean.
Enjoy!

I found a lot of similarities between Korean and Vietnamese cuisine when it comes to eating BBQ. Both Korean and Vietnamese BBQ are served with tons of fresh vegetables in the form of a wrap. This is one thing I don't think you'll ever find in Western BBQ. I think the reason is because Asian people like to eat very thing with vegetables because it helps refresh their palettes. It's easy to go out and eat Korean BBQ in New York where I live, but I prefer to eat at home because I can get as messy as I'd like (lol) and it's also much cheaper. You should try this Homemade Korean BBQ recipes once, I am sure there will be a second, third, fourth...time because you'll definitely love it! ;)
